Description

The Institute of Tea, Subtropical Crops and Tea Industry of the Georgian Agrarian University, located in Anaseuli in western Georgia, is a research-and-education center set on about 8 hectares in a humid subtropical climate. It combines experimental tea plantations with a rich dendrological park of more than 100 subtropical plant species, such as citrus, olive, laurel, persimmon, hazelnut, and walnut. The base was renovated between 2013 and 2015 to include modern auditoriums, a computer lab, and a specialized scientific laboratory. The Institute carries out research into high-yield and disease-resistant tea varieties, subtropical crop genetics, plant protection, and energy-efficient tea processing. It also supports training, conferences, and professional development, and publishes a long-standing scientific journal called Subtropical Crops.

What visitors can see during a ~1.5-hour tea tour:

  • A guided walk through the tea plantations, where they can observe experimental tea bushes and learn about local varieties.

  • A tour of the dendrological park with its wide variety of subtropical trees and plants.

  • Exploration of the historic tea-factory buildings, including Soviet-era architecture and machinery.

  • A visit to the processing area, seeing how different teas (black, green, etc.) are made.

  • Entry into the experimental laboratory where tea quality and research are conducted.

  • Stories and historical context from guides about the Institute’s role in Georgian tea history.

  • A tea tasting or brewing demonstration, depending on the tour format.

Summary

The Anaseuli Institute of Tea is a unique place where science, history, and nature meet: it fosters research and education on tea and subtropical crops in a beautifully green setting. A 1.5-hour visit gives travelers a rich, sensory experience of Georgia’s tea heritage — from walking through tea bushes and botanical gardens to exploring old factory buildings, watching processing, and tasting freshly brewed tea.
