Information about company, address and contact

Velvet Tea (also known as Velveti or Teamo) is an organic tea initiative based in Gezruli, Chiatura, in Georgia’s Imereti highlands. Founded in 2016 by Koba Shekiladze and a small team, the cooperative revived old tea plantations and now grows, processes, and packages tea at about 650-690 meters above sea level.

They produce several varieties: black tea, green tea, blueberry leaf tea, a small quantity of wild white tea, and herbal tisanes from foraged plants like oregano. Their teas are hand-picked and processed to European organic certification standards. Modern equipment for drying, rolling, sorting etc., was acquired with support from the GRETA project (a EU-funded program involving Austria and Sweden) to improve quality without compromising organic, artisanal methods.

The flavor profile tends to be mild and sweet; the black teas are low in harsh tannins, with notes reminiscent of peach, while the green teas are soft and delicate. Beyond production, Koba envisions Velvet Tea also as a destination for agrotourism: tastings, a tea pavilion, maybe lodging overlooking the plantation.
